Derby Investigation Puts Empire Maker Back In Preakness Picture
BALTIMORE, 05-10-03---In wake of the investigation regarding Jose Santos carrying an object in the Kentucky Derby, Bobby Frankel has decided to point Derby runner-up Empire Maker to the Preakness Stakes®. If Funny Cide is disqualified then Empire Maker would be declared the winner.
On Thursday Frankel told Pimlico officials that Empire Maker would skip the Preakness and that he would run either Peace Rules or Midas Eyes in the middle jewel of the Visa Triple Crown.
“I talked to Bobby Frankel this morning and he told me in light of the events that he was probably going to bring Empire Maker and not the other horse,” said Lou Raffetto, Chief Operating Officer of the Maryland Jockey Club. “He’s a potential Triple Crown candidate. We have two horses who are Triple Crown candidates.”
Jerry Bailey will ride. He has been aboard the Juddmonte Farms colt in all six starts.
Frankel was traveling from California to New York and was unavailable for comment.
